The first international road race for the William K. Vanderbilt Jr. Cup took place in 1904.

The 30-mile course zig-zagged through Nassau and Queens counties and ended in Westbury.

Cars sped east through Floral Park and on to the finish line via Jericho Turnpike, a dirt road that was sprinkled with a film of oil to keep the dust down. Village residents with yard frontage on Jericho Turnpike hosted many race enthusiasts from the city.

The winning car was #7, a French Panhard driven by George Heath. The prize was the silver cup and $20,000. The race is considered to be the most famous automobile road race to take place on Long Island and in New York State.
