The Floral Park 1779 House, originally owned by the Baylis Bailey Family is located at 116 Carnation Avenue

In colonial times, the Baylis Bailey family owned acres of farmland starting at Carnation Avenue and proceeding west, following the Long Island Railroad tracks.

The family home is still standing on the original site and likely to be just one of the structures that made up the homestead. It was built using “farm lot” trees – hewn timber-mortise-tennoned and braced and pinned.” Owners over the years have expanded the house and altered the interior.

“It is doubtful that any other Floral Park deed predates the one for this dwelling owned by William Bailey Baylis,” said architecthistorian Cuyler Beebe Tuthill, who sketched the house in 1949. He further noted “The construction date ‘1779’ was attached to a slab at the northeast corner of the house (a laudable practice).”
